How to make a tapestry crochet pattern from an image

This free tapestry crochet pattern generator turns your image into a chart you can edit before printing. No account is needed.

  1. 1

    Choose a clear picture

Start with a PNG, JPG or WebP with a simple silhouette and contrasting colors. Crop distracting backgrounds before uploading, then choose your picture above.

  2. 2

    Set the stitches and colors

Choose the chart width and color limit; try 2–4 colors for a simpler first project. Enter your measured stitch and row gauge, check the proportions, then paint or fill cells. Review small details after cleaning isolated stitches.

  3. 3

    Export or follow the rows

Download PNG or SVG, or a printable PDF with a color legend and row-by-row instructions. Set your hand, flat or round work and first-row side before exporting; choose A4, Letter or low-ink printing.

Start with the editable heart chart

32 stitches wide × 28 rows, 2 colors and 896 chart cells. Each cell represents one single crochet (US terms).

Open the original heart template to change its colors, edit a square or follow the color runs. Its finished size depends on your own gauge. Save the project JSON to keep the chart editable on another device.

Make a motif for your next project

Create a colorwork panel for wall art, a cushion or a bag. Bold shapes and a small palette make a useful starting point. The chart supplies the color placement; plan the construction and finishing for your own project.

Edit the heart template

Prepare the image and check the limits

Small lettering, faces, gradients and busy backgrounds can lose detail when reduced to a stitch grid. More stitches preserve more detail, but also change the size and time needed.

Transparent areas become a white background. The chart supports up to 300 × 300 cells and 24 colors; the color palette is not a yarn-brand color match.

The result is a single-crochet color chart. Shaping, seams, turning chains and a complete bag or garment pattern are not included. Check a small swatch before committing to a larger piece.

Guides for your first tapestry chart

A few things before you start

Is the pattern maker free?+

Yes. Creating, editing and exporting PNG, PDF and project files are free. No account is needed.

Do my photos leave my device?+

No. Image conversion happens in your browser. Images, chart cells and typed text are not sent to an image service.

Will a photo look exactly the same in crochet?+

No. A limited stitch count and palette lose detail. Start with bold shapes, check your measured gauge and make a small swatch before a large project.

Which way do I read a chart?+

Row 1 is at the bottom. With the first row on the right side (RS), right-handed flat work starts right to left and left-handed work starts left to right. Starting on the wrong side (WS) reverses those directions. Flat rows alternate; unturned rounds keep one direction. Match the settings to your technique.

Can I recover a project on another device?+

Download the editable JSON project and import it on the other device. Browser drafts are local; clearing browser storage can remove them.

Are these complete bag or garment patterns?+

No. The tools create colorwork charts and counted rows. Construction, shaping, seams, turning chains and finishing are not included.
